A glimpse of Glass

I expect it has happened to all of us who listen to music on mp3 players–someone asks, “What are you listening to?” On the occasion the music selection is totally unexpected you get the delayed response of, “oh, ok,” and that is that. Chalk it up to another strange response from a person who doesn’t share your musical tastes.

I typically receive that kind of feedback when listening to film scores, which actually outnumber music albums on my iPod. However for me, there’s no better soundtrack for life than walking down a crowded Chicago street to a booming Lord of the Rings battle or jettisoning work to Andy’s escape from Shawshank prison. Too seldom we get to pull back the curtain and see the composers behind these amazing works. However, a new documentary is revealing one to us– Philip Glass.

An incredible composer of operas, symphonies, theater, and film scores, he is profiled in Glass, A Portrait of Philip in 12 Parts. As Kirsten previously wrote, a film trailer can intrigue and captivate you for an upcoming release. Unfortunately, a trailer is all I have the pleasure of seeing now as the film has not been widely released to date. Still, from the scenes shown, I wait anxiously to see how this year in the life of Philp Glass unfolds, from making incredible music to pizza and sandcastles with his family.

The score for The Fog Of War was amazing, mesmerizing, heart thumping. I can’t find words to describe his gift! Exciting, new, intriguing, captivating? Kirsten helped me rediscover Glass, and it compliments (and even supercedes out of renewed newness) my love of classical music, and of all music! Glass and Bela Fleck (solo) should collaborate!

I absolutely love Philip Glass. I didn’t know about this movie! Thanks for filling me in!
